Meet Millie, our adopted sloth from the Avarios Sloth Sanctuary in Costa Rica. She is a 13-year old, two-fingered sloth that arrived at the sanctuary in 2000. She was found cold, wet, sick and hungry when Avarios took her in. They named her Millie after the Millennium. Millie has since recovered from her weakened condition and is a healthy, happy and very smart sloth! She is now a star in Avarios’ environmental education program for children, teaching them about the importance of sloths and the vital role they play in the rainforest.
Why do we love sloths so much? Well they are hard not to love with their sweet nature, relaxed approach to life and their happy smiling sloth expressions.
Here is a poem that Avarios included with our adoption packet:
Ode to a Two-Fingered Sloth
by Joe Mazur
Waiting silently among the foliage
Waiting for the grass to grow
The Jungle awakes and so do you
No need to rush
Life is to be savored
Bur nevermind philosophy
It’s time to eat
Using almost imperceptible movement
Paw over Paw
Claw over Claw
You make your way across the forest
Graceful as an acrobat
Speedy as a snail
Slipping silently through space
Perhaps some delicious leaves
Or maybe not
It doesn’t matter
A knowing smile crosses your face
You have all the time in the world
That is a Beautiful thing
The canopy is your kingdom
The jungle is your realm
King of the Day
The future is so far away
Carpe Diem
Or not
That’s the beauty of being a Sloth
